A large study published in the August 16 online edition of the The Lancet reinforces the life gains to be had from exercise. AND the data shows that even 15 minutes a day delivers an extra 3 years.
In August, The Lancet, a reputable medical journal published a study of 416,175 people (men and women) in Taiwan over more than eight years according to the amount of weekly exercised accumulated. They were then grouped by levels of activity; starting at low (15 minutes per day), medium, high or very high (60 minutes per day).
The benefits of exercise in all age groups, in both sexes and in those at risk of cardiovascular are clear compared to the inactive group as a standard. In short:
• Inactive people increase mortality risk by 17% over the low volume (15 min) group
• Those averaging 15 minutes a day reduce mortality risk by 14% (add 3 years of life)
• Each additional 15 minutes reduces all cause mortality by an 4% and all-cancer mortality by 1%
Limitations to the study include observational design, self-reported exercise, and limited to Taiwan.
CONCLUSION
Exercise benefits confirmed!
If you have time for a short burst of activity - DO IT! IT COUNTS!
